What is a nutritional therapist and what can they do for me?

The other day a friend asked me what a nutritionist actually does, and the question took me by surprise, as I’ve always been so fascinated by the effects of food on health and energy.

“Great question!” I thought. It could be confusing for lots of people, and another day I’ll get onto the difference between nutritionists and dieticians…

My job as a nutritionist is to match you up with the best possible foods for your body and mind as they are today, looking at what they’ve experienced in life. Working that out requires in-depth questioning and curiosity, and then research into the latest findings relating to food, medications, supplements, herbs and lifestyle activities/choices.

Nutritionists take a holistic approach, that is to say, we look at everything. In my own personal experience, developing symptoms in 3 different areas of my body needs to be looked at as one big picture, finding the root of the imbalance, and working from there. This can take some work, as all bodies are different, life experiences lead to varying outcomes, and no two people have the same habits or tastes.

For me personally, seeing a nutritionist gave me a chance to explore my health past and present, put it on the table and examine it, discover some truths for myself, and then hand them over to someone I trusted to guide and support me along that stretch of my healing path.

In the clients I’ve had, it’s been truly wonderful to see them learn, hear themselves, be heard and take big steps to improve their wellbeing. I look forward to accompanying more people on their paths to feeling better and more empowered.

How’re you doing with looking after your health today?
